Join our team as a Model Finisher!
The Model Finisher is primarily responsible for the safe cleaning and finishing of additive manufactured parts in accordance with Protolabs procedures and customer specifications, identifying non-conformances in parts.
Monday - Friday, 10am- 630pm
What you will do
- Perform finishing processes for additive manufactured parts in accordance with Protolabs procedures and customer specifications, which may include: hand finishing, part cleaning and counting, measuring, sanding, grit blasting, polishing, and build breakouts.
- Use of tools, such as: calipers, sandpaper, tweezers, clippers, air guns, dremels, drills, soldering rods, and other appropriate tools.
- Use of computer workstation to review order and part information, and to enter related information regarding the order.
- Follow and complete all applicable checklists.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area and individual workspace and assist in general cleanliness and maintenance of the facility.
- Clean and assist in maintaining any machinery/tools.
- Assist in the removal and disposal of contaminated materials.
- Work in a self-guided manner within assigned area. Assignments may be given by the Lead, Supervisor, or Production Manager.
- Identify Non-Conformance parts, and collaborate with Leads, Quality Inspector, and/or Supervisor regarding issues with orders or part quality.
- Continually seek ways to improve work processes and individual performance.
- Follow processes to maintain appropriate inventory and supply levels.
- Observe and follow all Protolabs Safety and Quality policies and procedures, including use of any required PPE (safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed footwear, etc.) and safety/compliance training.
- May serve as back up for other finishing department roles.
- Maintain collaborative and respectful working relationships.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
What it takes
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Rigid attention to detail with the capacity to work with small features and tight tolerances.
- Must be able to follow instructions and focus on the specific details involved in accurately finishing models.
- Must be able to work while standing up to 75% of the time.
- Periods of high concentration and visual focus when finishing small and intricate models.
- Normal duties require the use of safety equipment to include but no limited to; safety glasses, hearing protection, respirators, lab coats and gloves.
- Must be able to read, write and speak English fluently.
- Ability to take direction and adapt quickly to a constantly fluid environment.
- Ability to learn proper caliper use for the accurate measuring of dimensions while model finishing.
- Manual dexterity required for working with delicate parts and equipment.
- Must possess good interpersonal skills, communication skills and work well in a team environment.
- Work involves infrequent lifting of materials and product up to 50 pounds
- Some basic computer skills necessary
- Manufacturing experience.
- Craft-oriented experience (jewelry making, woodworking, etc.).
- Experience with measuring tools and hand/power tools.

Physical Demands:
While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit; use a computer keyboard, monitor and mouse, telephone and printer; reach with hands, and arms, talk, see and hear. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, stoop or kneel and must be able to lift and/or move up to 70 pounds.
Work Environment:
Indoors (A/C); nonsmoking; the majority of this job function is performed in a manufacturing area exposed to machinery and noise; with eye protection and safety shoes required. Occasionally works in outside weather conditions. Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
